We are an organization with a rich legacy of selfless commitment to enabling and empowering society cutting across socio-cultural boundaries. Based out of Tiruchirapalli, our scope of services extends to the whole of Tamil Nādu. Our primary focus areas include Holistic Health and well-being, Social Transformation, Care of the Elderly, Self-reliance through Education and Empowering the vulnerable and marginalized segments of society.
In 1977, Tiruchirapalli faced unprecedented flooding, leaving many homeless and in dire need. In response, our founder Mrs. Sheerin Hasrat, along with a diverse group of women, transcending religious, communal, and class boundaries, united with a common goal: to alleviate the suffering of those affected. This marked the inception of the Khajamalai Ladies Association (KLA), a beacon of compassion and service.
Supported by dedicated social workers like Ms. Saraswathi Venkatraman, Ms. Shobha Ramachandran (the first lady of the district), Ms. Chandra Saivasailam, Ms. Karunambigai, Ms. Fathima Mannan, Ms. Shameen Fazlullah, Ms. Suba Vijayarangan, Ms. Kareema Muthalib, Ms. Manjula Balasubramaniam, and several other dedicated women, KLA swiftly mobilized resources to provide relief and support to the devastated families. Their dedication caught the attention of the district administration, which honored their efforts with a plot of land to further their mission.
KLA’s inaugural project, a primary healthcare center known as the “1 Rupee Hospital,” symbolized their commitment to accessible healthcare for all. Subsequently, KLA expanded its endeavors by establishing vocational training centers, garment-production unit, Auxiliary Nursing Midwife training program, Lab technician and X Ray Technician Programs offering skill development opportunities to underprivileged women. With unwavering support from local, state, and national authorities, KLA emerged as a revered non-profit organization, renowned for its transformative work across Tiruchirappalli district and Tamil Nadu.
The institution collaborated with APAC and NACO and spearheaded a HIV and AIDS Prevention Project in Tiruchirapalli And Karur targeted at Sex workers and Truck Drivers; initiated and managed 300 Adult education centers and 23 Jana Siksha Nilayams as part of the National Literacy Mission; administered the smokeless Chulha program that benefitted 50,000 + families , supported the district government in running 25 schools for child laborers and school dropouts, ran a napkin making unit at the Central Jail for the women inmates ; made women self-reliant buy setting up more than 100 micro finance self-help groups ; extended assisted living support to senior citizens by establishing a home for the aged and most of all, rehabilitated more than 40,000 Alcohol and substance abusers through the Integrated Rehabilitation Center for Addicts and continue to do so.
While Ms Sheerin Hasrat founded the KLA Trust and was instrumental in its inception , growth and expanding the scope with projects cutting across socio-economic segments leading to several awards and accolades.
After her untimely demise, Ms Fathima Mannan carried on the legacy and took over from where she left. She scaled the organization to newer heights and ensured that the fabric and culture of the KLA trust was maintained in soul and spirit. During her tenure as trustee the organization won several laurels as well. This was followed by the selfless contribution of Ms Kareema Muthalib who took over from her and ensured that the legacy of trust and commitment was carried on.
